We are coming to an end of our weekly newsletters focused on our 2025 trends. We have had a few interruptions to deal with the trade situation, but we are now at the last of our trends. We hope this has helped you take a step back and focus on where our industry is going and guide some of the decisions in your business.
Artificial Intelligence in your business
The impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on our industry is not news. The challenge is how do you incorporate it into your business and where you draw the line. We have seen everything from AI developed products to entire media campaigns developed with this technology. The success of these examples might be questionable, but it is happening and costs a lot less than the more traditional methods. In our business we have chosen to use AI where we can automate proven processes and reduce repetition. We do not want it to replace critical thinking and give you content that comes from the same resource everyone else has access to.
The good
There are many applications of AI that are positives for your business. In business today it is probably difficult to find a business that does not use some form of AI. The applications we use to write the newsletter and format it use AI to correct spelling, suggest words (which I find frustrating) and keep track of our email list. There is no doubt it makes things more efficient.
If you are using Chat GTP or one of the other AI applications, you can ‘train’ it to write in your voice. You do this by asking it questions and refining the copy you get from it. You have to tell the application to use more humour or more fact-based arguments. It is very interesting to see how it does evolve. You have the ability to save this ‘voice’ so that when you get something the next time it will learn from the prompts you have provided and write with these guidelines. This can be very helpful when you are trying to write copy for social media posts or other communication.
Chat GTP is a great search engine. When using Google or Safari or any other search engine you need to know what you are looking for. You will find information or articles but then you need to read them. When you use one of the AI applications it will search the documents for you and provide a summary. You can also tell it to include sources, so you know you are getting something from a reputable place.
We use the AI meeting summary in zoom. This provides you with a detailed summary of the meeting. If you want to keep summaries or track the conversations it does a very good job. In the ‘old days’ we used to have to have someone take notes. It was a challenge to participate in the meeting and take notes. Now we can use the AI summary.
Many of the AI applications are great for generating ideas. You can ask them to come up with any list of ideas for almost any subject. It is great for starting the conversation.
Proofreading is one chore that can be a challenge, especially if you are writing your own content. AI applications can proof read your writing. There is an argument they can do it better than you, if you are the author. Keep in mind they might not use the same spelling we use in Canada, but you can train them for that too.
There are so many other examples of AI in production, processing, manufacturing and logistics. We are not the experts at those but they have probably been in your business for a while.
The bad
We do believe we should be wary of losing the power of critical thinking. When people rely on AI to do a lot of things it is true they accomplish a lot, but we do have to balance quantity with quality. People can assess all of this information and really determine if it is the correct voice for the brand or even consider how customers and consumers might react.
There is a lot of mis information generated by people and by AI. We have to be careful not to assume everything coming from an Ai application is correct and ‘run with it’.
With lots of years of experience, one has to be careful about assuming the old way is better or ‘this is not how we used to do it’. I must do my best to be objective and try new things. There is no doubt it is here to stay; we just have to figure out the best uses and boundaries.
You can generate a lot but you do have to still check it and give it that sober second though to make sure it is correct and using the right voice for your brand or your business or you.
We do think about too much reliance on AI from different businesses will result in a sea of sameness. If everyone is going to AI to generate lists of recipes or product uses, will they all become more or less the same? A possibility for sure and one to watch out for.
An experiment
We asked Chat GTP to do the following: Write a 900 word article for food producers and processors in Canada about the use of artificial intelligence in their business. Here is what we got, in about 90 seconds. Yes, it is faster, and we did not go back a number of times to refine the voice. It does focus on different topics than we did, but it does not provide any alternative views. The critical thinking we believe is important. We could have asked for that but should we have to ask?

Canadians looking for Canadian products
There is no doubt about the shift in consumer behaviour. Canadian consumers are looking for products produced in Canada by Canadian companies. We have had lots of inquiries about this. We know packaging cannot change quickly. It is work and it is expensive. You also probably have some on hand. Some things you can be doing to help consumers understand:
If you use a safety sticker as you pack product, get them printed with a maple leaf or other message about Canada
Visit stores to ensure they are using signage to tell consumers your product is made in Canada by Canadians. They are trying to do this, but it isn’t easy. Provide support where you can.
Partner with other suppliers to share the cost of getting the message out. Maple Leaf are doing it!
Do not be shy online. You should be reinforcing this every chance you get.
Check retailer’s online platforms to make sure your products are labelled correctly as Canadian.
